Cactus is the spectacular night-blooming cereus of Jamaica and Cuba. It is widely cultivated and has escaped from cultivation in tropical America and Hawaii. The succulent stems are tinctured and recommended by herbalists for strengthening and regulating the heartbeat. It was a favorite of the Eclectic physicians, a group of medical doctors active in the early part of the 20th century who used herbs rather than drugs in their extensive clinical practices. It is still widely used today in herbal preparations.
